I learned about this concept from my friend Christie.

I just like to say it … “radical hospitality.”

What does that mean exactly? I think it means to be so open, so accepting, so compassionately curious about all who come across our paths that we’re significantly outside the norm – radical.

Of course, we’re mostly very closed and narrow so being outside the norm may not really be that high an aspiration!

Henri Nouwen, a Catholic theologian defines hospitality this way:

“Hospitality is not to change people but to offer them space where change can take place.”

It’s important to note that the change to which he refers is change that is possible for both the host and the guest.

The idea that we could be so open as to constantly learn from one another – that’s radical.
